Flash Cards can be a helpful way to memorize symbols.

Agreed, I've used flash cards with people I have one on one mentored.  They often feel it is elementary school, but the basics must be mastered.  Certification exams will require schematic interpretation.  If you can't recognize the basic component symbols quickly and accurately, the rest of the work is that much harder.
